Somewhere between the router box shouting “WPA3!” and a forum thread calling WPA2 “broken,” a reasonable person ends up asking whether their perfectly functional router is now a liability. Plain-English answer: WPA2, properly configured, is still acceptable in 2026. WPA3 is meaningfully better. Alone, the difference doesn’t justify replacing hardware — but it’s a real tiebreaker when you’re replacing anyway. Here’s what’s actually different, minus the alphabet soup.

What WPA3 fixes, in human terms

1. Offline password cracking stops working. WPA2’s known weakness: someone parked nearby can record the brief handshake when a device joins your WiFi, take the recording home, and run password guesses against it at leisure — billions of tries, no further contact with your network. Short or dictionary-based passwords fall to this. WPA3’s redesigned handshake (SAE, since acronyms are mandatory once) makes each guess require a live exchange with your router. Recording-and-cracking-later is dead; guessing at network speed gets rate-limited into pointlessness.

Practical translation: on WPA2 your password strength is your whole defense; WPA3 forgives merely-decent passwords.

2. A cracked password no longer unlocks the past. WPA2 with a known password lets an eavesdropper decrypt traffic they recorded before they knew it. WPA3’s forward secrecy means each session has its own keys — yesterday’s capture stays opaque.

3. (Bonus) Public WiFi gets baseline encryption. WPA3’s companion feature encrypts open networks — irrelevant at home, occasionally lovely at the airport, and no reason to skip a VPN there anyway.

The Wi-Fi Alliance’s WPA3 specification has technical depth if you want it; the KRACK-style attacks on WPA2 (CERT/CC VU#228519 era) are patched in updated devices, which is one more reason firmware updates outrank everything.

So is WPA2 unsafe?

No — with two conditions. It must be WPA2-AES (anything offering WEP or TKIP belongs in recycling, and that’s a hardware-age smell test, not a settings issue), and the password must be a long passphrase, because password strength is load-bearing on WPA2 in a way it isn’t on WPA3. Four random words beat any keyboard-walk of symbols; your neighbor’s teenager with a downloaded cracking tool is the realistic adversary here, and passphrase length defeats them.

Meet both conditions and the honest risk delta between WPA2 and WPA3 for a normal household is small. Attackers overwhelmingly prefer routers with unpatched firmware and settings like WPS left on — softer targets than any WiFi encryption.

Transition mode is the free lunch: every device connects with the best security it speaks. The rare gotcha is a c. 2018-2020 device with buggy transition-mode support (symptom: constant reconnecting) — if one of yours sulks, update its firmware, and failing that, drop to WPA2-AES without guilt. A stable network you trust beats a flaky one with a better acronym.

When it does justify new hardware

  • Your router is old enough that it can’t do WPA3 — which usually means firmware updates have ended or will soon, and that’s the real reason to replace it
