Fortinet FortiGate 40F NGFW (hardware + 1-yr UTP bundle)

★★★★★ 4.5 (150 reviews)

The FortiGate 40F remains the default SMB next-gen firewall, still current in Fortinet's 2026 matrix. It is late in its lifecycle though — buyers starting fresh should compare the newer FortiGate 50G before committing.

What we loved

+True enterprise NGFW: IPS, web filtering, sandboxing via FortiGuard
+5 Gbps firewall throughput, 1 Gbps threat protection
+Fanless, compact, proven platform
+Massive enterprise ecosystem and documentation

Worth knowing

Requires paid annual UTP/FortiCare licenses to be useful
Late lifecycle — FortiGate 50G is the successor path
Steep learning curve for home users

Why we recommend it

If your small business handles sensitive customer data, the FortiGate 40F is the step up that makes sense. It gives you the same threat intelligence larger companies rely on.

It is not the friendliest box for a total beginner, but paired with a little setup help it is bulletproof and future-proof. One caveat for 2026 buyers: the 40F is late in its lifecycle, so compare the newer FortiGate 50G before committing to annual licenses.
