How We Test

Our testing methodology: real homes, real networks, weeks of hands-on use — and no sponsored rankings, ever.

Real networks, not spec sheets

Every product we recommend runs on a real network — a busy family home with 40+ devices and a small-office setup — for a minimum of two weeks before we score it. Firewalls face real traffic, mesh systems fight real walls, antivirus suites meet real malware samples in a sandboxed lab VM.

What the score means

Each product gets a score out of 10, weighted for the people we write for — families and small businesses, not enterprise IT:

WeightFactor
30%Protection that holds up (lab results + our testing)
25%Ease of setup and daily use for non-technical people
20%Honest total cost — including renewal prices and subscription creep
15%Features that matter (parental controls, VPN, local storage)
10%Support, updates and company track record

Our rules

  1. We buy or independently source products. Vendors don’t see reviews before publication.
  2. Affiliate links never affect rankings. The commission is the same to us whichever product you pick — so we pick the one we’d buy.
  3. Reviews get re-checked. Prices weekly, full re-tests when major firmware or versions ship. Every review shows its last-updated date.
  4. Discontinued products get flagged, not silently left to collect clicks.
